For anyone who has used the same phone, tablet, or computer for a long time, feeling unsure about what to buy when it is time to replace it is completely normal. Every year devices become faster, screens are clearer, cameras are better, and new features, including artificial intelligence, are appearing more often. This article shares a few practical considerations to make shopping for new technology feel easier.

When is the best time to buy new technology?

If a current device is frustrating or needs replacing soon, waiting a long time usually does not lead to major savings. For most people, the best time to buy is when there is a clear need and budget.

The main exception is when a major sale is only a few weeks away. Events such as Black Friday, back-to-school sales, and seasonal promotions can offer meaningful discounts on devices people already plan to buy.

Do we need to buy the most advanced product?

Usually, no. There’s plenty of reasonably priced computers, phones, and tablets that can comfortably handle the tasks most of us use our devices for every day.

How well a device performs, how long it remains useful, and how much it costs depends largely on the power of three key parts:

  • Processor: The computer’s brain. It handles instructions and helps programs run.

  • RAM: Short-term working memory. More RAM helps you use several apps or browser tabs at the same time.

  • Storage: Long-term memory. It saves photos, documents, apps, and other files, even when the computer is turned off.

There are very powerful devices available with the fastest processors, the most RAM, and the greatest amount of storage. However, you may not need the highest levels for everyday tasks.

If you would like help determining which processor, how much RAM, and how much storage will best fit your everyday technology use, please contact Bright Concierge.

Is it better to buy for the long term or upgrade often?

For people planning to keep a device for at least five years, it's worth choosing a future-ready product with a capable processor, enough RAM, and plenty of storage. It may cost more upfront, but it can remain useful longer and reduce the need for frequent upgrades or replacement.

For people who prefer to upgrade every two to three years, a processor and RAM that are “good enough” for current needs may be sufficient. These buyers may place greater value on features they can enjoy right away, such as a brighter screen, better camera, or richer sound, and replace their devices more often as new features become available.

Why is technology leaning more expensive right now?

Personal technology costs more right now because companies are adding AI features directly into their devices, and AI needs enormous computing power. Companies are racing to build chips, factories, and data centers, which drives up demand and prices for parts, energy, and new technology. As this building boom slows and more AI runs on personal devices, supply pressures may ease and prices could stabilize.

Do we need technology with built-in Artificial Intelligence?

Not necessarily, but lately it’s hard to avoid. Plus, built-in artificial intelligence (AI) makes a phone, tablet, or computer more helpful and convenient. AI can help organize photos, improve voice assistants, and offer useful suggestions quickly, giving you more use of your device.

Is any technology getting cheaper?

Some technology is improving while staying reasonably priced.

Smart TVs are still a strong value. Larger screens, better picture quality, and built-in streaming are becoming more available at lower price points as display-panel costs fall and production increases. Focus on the screen size, picture quality, and ease of use, not every pro feature.

Solar panels have become much more efficient and remain far less expensive than they were years ago. Prices have recently leveled off in many markets, but newer panels can produce more electricity from the same space.

Phones, tablets, and laptops use lithium-ion batteries. Battery technology continues to improve, but prices can change as demand for lithium and batteries rises.

A good technology purchase helps us complete everyday tasks, includes the features that matter most to us, lasts as long as we need it to, and fits comfortably within our budget.
